The Revenant Composer

Returning to the field of music after 20 years away.

Welcome! My name is Chris North, I write music, and am currently studying for a Masters in Music Composition at Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts. This is my blog.

Hi!

My name is Chris. A lifetime ago, I had aspiring dreams of becoming a composer of beautiful music. I even got as far as completing my undergraduate degree in Music Theory and Composition at The University of Sheffield in England, where (amongst others) I studied under the legendary experimental pianist Philip Thomas.

But, as it will, life has a way of taking one in directions we least expect, and for twenty years I thought this life was far behind me. I still wrote music here and there, but only for my own amusement, and only for myself to hear.

In those twenty years, however, I learned that it’s never too late to change course, and certainly never too late to follow one’s passions. So here I am in 2025, ready to start it all again!

This blog will be dedicated to chronicling my journey back into the world of academic music and composition – for better or for worse – as I shift gears mid-life. I don’t know if this will work out; I don’t even know if I’ll succeed in entering a music program yet after two decades out of the game. But if ever I’m to achieve my dreams … the time is now!
